Review: Frost by Marianna Baer

September 13, 2011
Balzer + Bray

Synopsis:
Leena Thomas’s senior year at boarding school starts with a cruel shock: Frost House, the cozy Victorian dorm where she and her best friends chose to live, has been assigned an unexpected roommate—confrontational, eccentric Celeste Lazar.
What Celeste lacks in social grace, however, her brother, David, a recent transfer student, makes up for in good looks and charm. But while he and Leena hit it off immediately, Leena finds herself struggling to balance her growing attraction with her fear of getting hurt.
As classes get under way, strange happenings begin to bedevil Frost House—frames mys-teriously falling off walls, doors locking by themselves, furniture toppling over. Celeste blames the housemates, convinced they want to scare her into leaving. And while Leena tries to play peacekeeper between her best friends and new roommate, soon the mysterious happenings in the dorm, an intense triangle between Leena, Celeste, and David, and the reawakening of childhood fears all push Leena to take increasingly desperate measures to feel safe. But does the threat lie with her new roommate, within Leena’s own mind . . . or in Frost House itself?
Frost is a stunning and surprising tale of suspense from debut author Marianna Baer.

My Review:
FROST is a creepy and highly addicting debut that is sure to entertain. I absolutely loved every moment of the story and I will definitely read more from Baer. Baer has just the right amount of romance, drama, and freaky events to leave you wanting more.

Leena is a thoughtful and responsible girl who gets way more than she bargained for when moving into Frost house her senior year. She has been wanting to live there ever since she saw the house and felt drawn to it. But when she moves in, weird things start occurring to her and her roommate Celeste that will chill you to the bone. I was terrified for both girls and I wanted to know what was happening! I felt so awful for Leena when her life started falling apart, all of it leading back to the dorm. There is a definite link to Leena's withdrawn and twitchy behavior that will leave you shivering.

Celeste really annoyed me at first, yet after all these horrible things happened to her, I came to care for her more. She didn't ask for any of these things to happen. Though she really aggravated me with her reckless behavior. And I hated the way she manipulated her brother, David. Even though there is something blooming between him and Leena, it is still all about Celeste. Which is why even though I did like Leena and David together, I hated it when they were around Celeste. David is way too protective of Celeste.

FROST is a wonderful debut that all YA fans are sure to enjoy. Do not pass this one up when it hits stores!

  2. Really nice review Bailey! I agree with you on Celeste, I got irritated with her control over David as well, I just wanted him and Leena to be able to spend some time together without David constantly worrying over Celeste or Celeste doing something to earn his worry.

  4. I haven't paid a lot of attention to this book and it sounds pretty good! But I think the characters would drive me insane. It sounds like something that might ruin the book for me. So maybe one day I'll pick this one up from the library, but I don't think I'll buy it. Great review!
