Review: Darkness Falls by Cate Tiernan

January 2, 2012
Little, Brown

Synopsis:
Nastasya has lived for hundreds of years, but for some reason, life never seems to get any better. She left her spoiled, rich girl life to find peace at River's Edge, a safe haven for wayward immortals. There, she learned to embrace River's Edge, despite some drama involving the sexy Reyn, who she wants but won't allow herself to have. But just as she's getting comfortable, her family's ties to dark magick force her to leave.

She falls back into her old, hard partying ways, but will her decision lead her into the hands of a dark immortal? Or will it be her first step to embracing the darkness within her?

My Review:
DARKNESS FALLS is an entertaining sequel to IMMORTAL BELOVED that falls a little short. While it was enjoyable, I felt like it was missing...something. The action was barely there until the end and the synopsis doesn't even begin to play out until the middle of the story. It does end on a happier note so I will be anxiously awaiting the last book in the trilogy.

Nastasya was much less annoying and immature than in IMMORTAL BELOVED. She has grown so much since first coming to River's Edge and I was able to understand her more. We gain more background into her past life, but I was a bit thrown off by her relationship with Reyn. She was all over him in IMMORTAL BELOVED, but now she ignores her feelings about him just because of her past. It is done and over with, Reyn is a better person. Move on!

I was gratified with more insight into the characters at River's Edge. Readers will learn more about River and her horrifying past that led her to change her ways. Reyn was much more likable and I was glad to see him opening up, no matter the way Nastasya was acting.

While I did like DARKNESS FALLS, I didn't love it. I found myself becoming a little bored in some scenes that seemed to drag on for ages. I would definitely recommend reading it if you liked Immortal Beloved, though. I did enjoy getting to know the characters better and I hope the last book in the trilogy will satisfy me more than this one.

  1. With the lack of action and scenes that drag out, it sounds a bit too slow for me. But as always, a great review!

  3. I agree with Danny, this is a big Hmmmm. I just got this one and was excited to read because I enjoyed the first book for the most part, but it doesn't seem like it's going to blow me away. I like that Nastasya is less annoying in this one, but I don't like that she shoves Reyn away. Poor Reyn. I'll love you! Glad it ends on a happy note though:)

  4. Thanks for the great honest review! It's a good thing that the character was less annoying however pushing the guy away over something in the past would drive me crazy too!

  5. I'm glad to hear she is less annoying in this one. I thought the first book left a lot of things left out.

  7. It's always a bummer when a sequel doesn't live up to its predecessor. I haven't read the first book, but I might hold off a bit before picking it up, knowing that the sequel is a bit of a letdown.

    Thanks for the honest review!
