Review: The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenberg

February 21, 2012
Penguin Young Readers Group

Synopsis:
Dying of a broken heart is just the beginning.... Welcome to forever.

BRIE'S LIFE ENDS AT SIXTEEN: Her boyfriend tells her he doesn't love her, and the news breaks her heart—literally.

But now that she's D&G (dead and gone), Brie is about to discover that love is way more complicated than she ever imagined. Back in Half Moon Bay, her family has begun to unravel. Her best friend has been keeping a secret about Jacob, the boy she loved and lost—and the truth behind his shattering betrayal. And then there's Patrick, Brie's mysterious new guide and resident Lost Soul . . . who just might hold the key to her forever after.

With Patrick's help, Brie will have to pass through the five stages of grief before she's ready to move on. But how do you begin again, when your heart is still in pieces?

My Review:
THE CATASTROPHIC HISTORY OF YOU AND ME is a powerful YA debut about death and the power of forgiveness. I didn't at all expect to love it as much as I did! One of my favorite things about the book is the music titles for each chapter. They really set the mood and made me enjoy the story that much more! I am definitely going to have to do a re-read in the future with the music for each chapter playing in the background!

Brie is one majorly complicated case. She literally dies of a broken heart and holds so much pain and anger towards Jacob, who caused said broken heart. Brie must be one heck of a romantic to die from such a cause! I honestly couldn't believe it at first, but the more I got to know Brie, the more I could understand the way she went out.

I can't tell you how many times I wanted to cry for Brie. The sadness that she feels as she watches her family fall apart from her death is heart-wrenching. I cannot imagine what I would do in her shoes if I had to witness the affect my sudden death had on my family. I could feel her pain and her family's grief at her loss. There were so many times that I felt like I was going to breakdown because of how sad it was. In the end, the powerful message of the story kept me going.

Patrick, the guy who helps Brie move through her five stages of grief, is a bit of an enigma. He can be so cute and funny at times, but there were times that he would show what emotions he was hiding and I just wanted to understand him. This is as much his story as it is Brie's. The twist that connected him and Brie shocked me to the core, and I was not at all expecting it.

One of my favorite silly parts of the novel is Patrick's nicknames for Brie, since it is a cheese you know. My all-time favorite nickname for Brie was Cheeto. It made me laugh every time he came out with it and it really lightened up the darker moments in the story.

THE CATASTROPHIC HISTORY OF YOU AND ME is more than just a novel about death. It is about living life to it's fullest and recognizing that impossible things may be possible. While 2012 may have barely started, I can say with absolute conviction that this will be going in my top ten favorite YA novels of 2012.

I never meant for anyone to get hurt. All I wanted to do that night was make a play for Carter Davis. His heartless rejection was mortifying, but people got the wrong idea when they saw me leaving his bedroom, crying. That’s how rumors of rape started.

Now girls at school are pouring out their sympathy to me. Guys too. But not everyone’s on my side. The school has become a war zone and the threats are getting scary. What began as poetic justice has morphed into something bigger-forcing me to make a terrible choice.

Review: The Fine Art of Truth or Dare by Melissa Jensen

February 16, 2012
Speak

Synopsis:
Ella is nearly invisible at the Willing School, and that's just fine by her. She's got her friends - the fabulous Frankie and their sweet cohort Sadie. She's got her art - and her idol, the unappreciated 19th-century painter Edward Willing. Still, it's hard being a nobody and having a crush on the biggest somebody in the school: Alex Bainbridge. Especially when he is your French tutor, and lessons have started becoming, well, certainly more interesting than French ever has been before. But can the invisible girl actually end up with a happily ever after with the golden boy, when no one even knows they're dating? And is Ella going to dare to be that girl?

My Review:
Full of laughs and cute moments galore, THE FINE ART OF TRUTH OR DARE is one 2012 book you are for sure going to want on your keeper shelf. After reading some pretty dark and dismal books, it was just what I needed for a little uplifting. Ella's perspective is a delight to read from and I relished in all her experiences at Willing. While some instances in the story were dramatic and less than believable, Ella's wit and Alex's charm more than made up for them.

Ella is a sweet, insecure girl whose adoration with a long deceased Edward Willing is quite interesting. Her "conversations" with him speak of her subconscious feelings about the world and her place in it and give us insight into who Ella really is. Ella's interactions with Alex have so many sparks! Every time they are together the chemistry is palpable and they work so well together!

Alex is a bit of a mystery at first. With the way that Ella sees things in her life, she isn't quite sure if he is a genuine nice guy or just another arrogant and snobby Phillite. This is a contemporary romance though, so there had to be something there. And boy is there ever something!! That boy is sure to make your heart pitter patter with the way he speaks to Ella. I am in love!

I hate books where the heroine is a loner without any friends at all. This definitely isn't that kind of book, fortunately!Frankie and Sadie are Ella's two awesome friends who I am so grateful for. They truly make an impact on Ella's life and she wouldn't be the same without them.

The one thing that just rubbed me wrong about the novel is Amanda. She is so hateful and vicious to Ella that is was quite hard to believe. They have hardly spoken to one another, yet Amanda's words she spits out at Ella are extreme and VERY mean. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think someone would be that mean to someone they hardly ever interact with. It isn't realistic.

Besides the whole Amanda thing, I think you will definitely have a great time reading this one! The laughs are aplenty and my heart is still recovering from all of the fluttering when Alex comes on the scene! Take a chance on THE FINE ART OF TRUTH OR DARE!

The Fine Art of Truth or Dare Tour: Music Post from Melissa Jensen

Author of The Fine Art of Truth or Dare, Melissa Jensen is here to talk about her book and music.

I’m happy to talk about music. I like to talk about music. In fact…please Please PLEASE let me talk about music now and tomorrow and next week when someone wants me to actually be talking about the Federal Reserve or the Eagles or ponies.

After coffee, my fave part of the morning is putting together a workout playlist on my iPhone. I lived for mix tapes when I was a teenager—when they were real, true, casette tapes. Love iTunes. Love the fact that mix tapes are now playlists and cds. Hint hint to anyone who thinks it might be fun to send the nice, music-junkie author a mix tape-cd. Hint, part deux. I don’t much care for dubstep or gooey croony stuff. Just about anything else makes me happy.

Anyway.

I always write music into my stories. Sometimes it’s not particularly good music; usually it’s recognizable. In FALLING IN LOVE WITH ENGLISH BOYS, Cat headed her blog entries with topical songs (mostly recognizable, some not very good). In TRUTH OR DARE, Ella and her friends like to hang out at Chloe’s, a combo Greek restaurant, karaoke bar, and shoe repair shop. I’m not a karaoke afficionado, but I am a huge fan of good—or just interesting—covers. Big fan of Top Ten lists, too. So I thought what I would do here is give you two playlists: one comprised of some of my fave covers and one comprised of the songs I keep coming back to recently for my morning playlists. They don’t necessarily go together, but they make me go faster. And yes, in case you were wondering, you really can get a good pounding, heart-pumping pace going to collegiate acappella. Really.

My Top Ten Fave Covers (this week, anyway):
-Femme Fatale by Girl in a Coma (orig. the Velvet Underground)
-Heart of Glass by the Puppini Sisters (orig. Blondie)
-Hey Ya by Mat Weddle (orig. Outkast)
-I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bon Iver (orig. Bonnie Raitt)
-Low by Tommy Knox (orig. Flo-Rida)
-Personal Jesus by Johnny Cash (orig. Depeche Mode)
-Redemption Song by Joe Strummer (orig. Bob Marley and the Wailers)
-Take On Me by A.C. Newman (orig. A-ha)
-Throw Your Arms Around Me by Eddie Vedder (orig. Hunters &     Collectors)
-Valerie by Amy Winehouse (orig. the Zutones)

I’m going to move on. Before I change my mind. See, there’s this other version of…

Okay.

Top Ten Wake Up and Move Your Butt Songs (this week, anyway)
-All the Above by On the Rocks…or Maino, depending on my mood
-Club Can’t Handle Me by Flo-Rida…or the Dartmouth Aires
-Don’t Look Back into the Sun by the Libertines
-I Wanna Be Sedated by the Ramones
-Kick Drum Heart by the Avett Brothers
-Lolli Lolli by Three 6 Mafia
-Should I Stay or Should I Go by the Clash
-Somewhere in Brooklyn by Bruno Mars
-Stuck Like Glue by Sugarland
-Sydney (I’ll Come Running) by Brett Dennen

Wow. That is one decidedly crazy list. Who cares? It lives only in my iPod. And just try sit still while listening to any of the ten. Dare you.

Teehee! It was great having you on the blog, Melissa!! =) Thanks for stopping by.

Review: In Too Deep by Amanda Grace

February 8, 2012
Flux

Synopsis:
I never meant for anyone to get hurt. All I wanted to do that night was make a play for Carter Wellesley.
What began as poetic justice has morphed into something bigger—forcing me to make a terrible choice.

My Review:
IN TOO DEEP is a powerful YA that explores the danger of rumors and their lasting affects on people. Grace's novel deeply affected me, and while there were some flaws, they were easy to overlook. I look forward to more from Grace.

Sam isn't perfect. In fact, she is far from that. She is completely humiliated by Carter, and feels broken. But she didn't mean for the false rumors to spread about her being assaulted by Carter. Sure, he is a complete jerk who has no respect for women, but rape is pretty serious. She is so torn about what to do about it, and it only gets worse when Carter's friends begin threatening her.

I felt really bad for Sam. She has such a tough life, and just when things are starting to look up, the false rumors pop up and she fears their consequences. She wants so badly to correct them, but she is already "in too deep" and can't seem to get herself out. I was rooting for things to start going her way. While I did find her annoying at times, I could understand where she was coming from

The pacing of IN TOO DEEP was a bit of a problem for me. I felt like things happened way too fast considering. I don't want to give too much away, but the whole Nick and Sam thing was really weird. They have known each other for so long with nothing, and then it happens??? It just didn't add up for me.

While IN TOO DEEP did have its problems, I enjoyed myself overall. Grace has created a fascinating and relatable storyline that readers out there are sure to gobble up.

They call me 'New Girl'...

Ever since I arrived at exclusive, prestigious Manderly Academy, that’s who I am. New girl. Unknown. But not unnoticed—because of her.

Becca Normandy—that’s the name on everyone’s lips. The girl whose picture I see everywhere. The girl I can’t compare to. I mean, her going missing is the only reason a spot opened up for me at the academy. And everyone stares at me like it’s my fault.

Except for Max Holloway—the boy whose name shouldn’t be spoken. At least, not by me. Everyone thinks of him as Becca’s boyfriend but she’s gone, and here I am, replacing her. My Review:
The first time I saw the cover for INCARNATE, I fell in love with it. I didn't care what I had to do, I had to get this book in my hands, if only so I could pet the cover. Well, even though the cover is beyond beautiful, the story surpassed the cover for me. That's how good it is. If I had to choose just one word to describe INCARNATE, I wouldn't be able to. It is so much more than a single word can describe. Addictive, compelling, GORGEOUS, breathtaking, captivating, delightful, delicious, magnificent, mesmerizing...those are what come to mind when I think about INCARNATE. I am so sad that I finished it so quickly because I didn't want to leave this world!

I really want to give Ana a HUGE hug. The poor girl didn't have any choice in the matter of being born, yet the society still punishes her for it. They ignore her, throw her hateful looks, and call her filthy names like "nosoul". Ana is not a nosoul at all. She is beautiful inside and out. She is a bit skittish from living with her evil mother Li for 18 years of her short life, but it is very understandable considering how Li treated her.

Can I just give Meadows a big hug for creating a protagonist like Sam? He is one of my absolute favorite love interest of YA. His heart is big enough to open up to let Ana is, and he doesn't let Ana's circumstances dictate how he treats her. He never once acted rude or obnoxious, but showed how beautiful his soul is. I LOVE Sam and I cannot wait for more of him in the next novel.

The action is aplenty in INCARNATE. Within a few chapters, Ana has already had two near death experiences! Talk about a rough few days. The lore and the creatures like sylph and dragons drew me in and I absorbed every bit of information about them. I am so glad I don't have to deal with those beings!

The whole idea of reincarnation has always fascinated me, so it's no surprise that I love this book so much. Meadows doesn't skimp on the information, but at the same time she waits for the perfect time to reveal the bits and pieces. The end of INCARNATE is when things really get interesting and readers learn the answers to the questions they've had swirling around their heads for the last 300 pages.

When INCARNATE hits stores, I am definitely going to be picking up a finished copy. It will be going on the keeper shelf for sure. Don't pass up INCARNATE when you spot it in stores. The story is just as amazing as the cover.

Review: Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken

June 1, 2010
EgmontUSA

Synopsis:
When Wayland North brings rain to a region that's been dry for over ten years, he's promised anything he'd like as a reward. He chooses the village elder's daughter, sixteen-year-old Sydelle Mirabel, who is a skilled weaver and has an unusual knack for repairing his magical cloaks. Though Sydelle has dreamt of escaping her home, she's hurt that her parents relinquish her so freely and finds herself awed and afraid of the slightly ragtag wizard who is unlike any of the men of magic in the tales she's heard. Still, she is drawn to this mysterious man who is fiercely protective of her and so reluctant to share his own past.

The pair rushes toward the capital, intent to stop an imminent war, pursued by Reuel Dorwan (a dark wizard who has taken a keen interest in Sydelle) and plagued by unusually wild weather. But the sudden earthquakes and freak snowstorms may not be a coincidence. As Sydelle discovers North's dark secret and the reason for his interest in her and learns to master her own mysterious power, it becomes increasingly clear that the fate of the kingdom rests in her fingertips. She will either be a savior, weaving together the frayed bonds between Saldorra and Auster, or the disastrous force that destroys both kingdoms forever.

My Review:
High fantasy at its core, BRIGHTLY WOVEN is sure to delight lovers of the genre! Full of magic and myths galore, I couldn't put it down for even a second! I fell in love with Sydelle and North and their adventures. I am so sad that it took me this long to dive in! It is a fantastic YA debut and a must read for all YA fans.

Sydelle's life is anything but eventful. She lives in the dreary and dry Cliffton that hasn't seen rain in a long, long time. While out with her friends on a seemingly normal day, her life is thrown into chaos. It rains! But along with the rain comes North, a wizard that brings terrible news to her little town and spurs her and North on a long journey to save the country.

North isn't much better off than Sydelle. He doesn't have a real home and has a deadly secret about himself that he hides from the world. The battle between him and Doran ignites off the pages and fuels the story on. On the romantic side, North's journey with Sydelle causes his heart to open and accept someone new into his life who may be just as special, if not more, than he is.

Bracken truly has a way with words. Sydelle and North come to life off the pages and I felt as if I was on their journey right alongside them. Her vivid descriptions create gorgeous images that I can picture perfectly! There is plenty of action to keep you entertained, even if the story does lull in a few scenes. But besides the few pauses in the story, I have no other complaints!

Bracken has proven herself to be a well-versed and lyrical author with BRIGHTLY WOVEN. Don't hesitate to pick this one up!

Review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

January 2, 2012
Poppy

Synopsis:
Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan's life. She's stuck at JFK, late to her father's second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon to be step-mother that Hadley's never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport's cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he's British, and he's in seat 18C. Hadley's in 18A.

Twists of fate and quirks of timing play out in this thoughtful novel about family connections, second chances and first loves. Set over a 24-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver's story will make you believe that true love finds you when you're least expecting it.

My Review:
When I first heard about this one, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! The title is so cute and the cover is gorgeous, so I was hoping the book would be just as good. I am happy to say that I was more than pleased, though I had a few minor annoyances. I cannot believe how believable Smith made a romance that developed over the course of 24 hours! The writing style is equally as engaging and it drew me in with in the first few sentences. Smith has made me a fan for sure!

Hadley isn't very happy. Her dad walked out on her mom, probably because of another woman who he is marrying, and she has to attend the wedding all the way in Oxford! She feels betrayed by her dad and won't forgive the pain he caused her mother. It gets even worse for Hadley when she misses her flight to Oxford and has to catch a later one! But when she meets Oliver, a boy with his own set of problems, in the airport, they have an instant connection that blossoms over the course of their time together.

My heart went out to Hadley. If my father did such a thing to my mother, I would feel the exact same way she did. I don't even think that I would have it in me to attend the wedding! I hoped for a happily ever after for Hadley, and I was so happy that she had Oliver. I was extremely nervous about how it would all work out, though! I knew they would have to part ways, but they were meant to be! They had to somehow find each other before the last page or I just wouldn't be satisfied.

Oliver was such a mystery, but I fell for him just as easily as Hadley did. His quirky personality lights up the pages and I couldn't get enough of him! I want my own Oliver! He miraculously got Hadley to open up and consider her relationship with her father. I think Smith has given me yet another book boyfriend; the first one of 2012 for me!

The thing that just grated on me wrong was how easily Hadley repaired the relationship with her father. I'm sorry, but after a year of pain and feelings of betrayal and anger, it wouldn't happen within hours. Somehow the falling in love within 24 hours is more believable to me than her newly mended relationship with her father.

I love, love, love THE STATISTICAL PROBABILITY OF LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. It is a story about more than love, but also family and forgiveness that will leave you feeling satisfied.

Review: Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready

Simon Pulse

My Review:
Jeri Smith-Ready has done it again! She seamlessly weaves together a tragic and heartfelt story full of surprises and romance that singes the pages. I cannot get enough of this series!! I just want to dive in the pages and never leave the world that Smith-Ready has crafted. She ends it on a stunning note that will have you dying for SHINE.

Aura is one determined and amazing girl! I don't know what I would do if I was in her shoes. The whole her being the first post-Shift baby born makes her life extremely complicated, added to that her love triangle with Logan and Zach. I don't care that Logan is a ghost, I can see why Aura can't resist him! He is too yummy for his own good. And then there is Zach with his Scottish background. WOW. Just plain wow. I would want to be in Aura's place, but at the same time it is just a tad complicated.

There is so much at stake in SHIFT. Aura and Zach come closer to discovering what led to the Shift and in doing so learn things about their background that are way to messed up to fully comprehend. Smith-Ready sure throws some whammies at her characters and readers! I DID NOT expect what led to Aura's birth. Craziness, I tell you.

I have to say, Smith-Ready is great at getting my emotions going. I didn't expect to have SHIFT read in a mere few hours, but that's what happened. I couldn't stop turning the pages! Especially when the twists were thrown in, and there were quite a few of those. I have to say, I do love me some Zach, but there were quite a few moments in the story where I wanted to scream at him!! Why must guys be so hard-headed?

SHINE has to be on shelves tomorrow, it just has to be! I don't know how I am going to wait five months for its release. But don't let that stop you from picking this one up! It is a captivating and outstanding sequel to SHADE.

Over the past summer, an overwhelming number of male students have left Kelly and Hunter's small high school class. Some were sent to private school and others moved away. Desperate coaches are recruiting him for sports teams, and the drama teacher casts him in the lead role of the school musical. Even the Spandexers, powerful popular girls in tight pants, are noticing Hunter in a new light - with a little work, he could have potential. He might even be boyfriend material...

In order to tand out from the crowd and win Hunter's heart, Kelly needs a "stimulus package" in the form of cougar lessons from a senior girl who dates hot freshman boys and advice on the male mind from her Cosmo-addicted best friend, Aviva. As if dating wasn't hard enough without a four-to-one ratio!

Why I'm Excited:
The Boy Recession sounds like a cute and engaging contemporary that I will love. =)
