Review: Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

December 27, 2011
EgmontUSA

Synopsis:
Every other day, Kali D'Angelo is a normal sixteen-year-old girl. She goes to public high school. She attends pep rallies. She's human.

And then every day in between . . .She's something else entirely.

Though she still looks like herself, every twenty-four hours predatory instincts take over and Kali becomes a feared demon-hunter with the undeniable urge to hunt, trap, and kill zombies, hellhounds, and other supernatural creatures. Kali has no idea why she is the way she is, but she gives in to instinct anyway. Even though the government considers it environmental terrorism.

When Kali notices a mark on the lower back of a popular girl at school, she knows instantly that the girl is marked for death by one of these creatures. Kali has twenty-four hours to save her and, unfortunately, she'll have to do it as a human. With the help of a few new friends, Kali takes a risk that her human body might not survive. . .and learns the secrets of her mysterious condition in the process.

My Review:
Jennifer Lynn Barnes doesn't pull any punches with this one. Her writing is lyrical and flowing, with just enough snark to entertain. Her characters are real and full of life, making it a complete joy to join them on their journey. I am still in awe after finished EVERY OTHER DAY and I don't think I'll be coming off this high anytime soon!

Kali is, for lack of better words, freaking awesome! Her life experiences have made her into a strong and fierce girl whose determination and protectiveness shines through. And her ability that makes itself known every 24 hours...just WOW. I had no idea what was going on, why she was what she was, or what was going to happen to her! I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

The side cast of characters were just as brilliant. Skylar is a bit wacky but such a sweetheart. Kali really needed a friend like her and I was so glad they found each other. Skylar added much needed comic relief when things seemed so dreary. Bethany, while a bit shallow at first, proved to be a great person in the end. She is extremely loyal, even to Kali whom she kept claiming wasn't her friend. These two girls were the perfect sidekicks to Kali!

The paranormal aspect in this one is totally unique and out there. There are so many different beings in this one that make it so exciting! Barnes packed so much into this one little novel and she did it so well. I now know that there isn't anything written by her that I won't love. I am really hoping that EVERY OTHER DAY won't end up being a standalone novel because it only barely whet my appetite. More, please.

Barnes has created a magical novel that you are sure to remember long after finishing. Do not pass this one up!!

  2. This one didn't sound appealing to me based on the synopsis but after reading your review, I think I've changed my mind and will probably take a look at it. Kali seems interesting and I like that she has some loyal friends rather than what a lot of books have which is that the MC's friends are often mean or jealous.
