Review: The Mephisto Covenant by Trinity Faegan

September 27, 2011
Egmont USA

Synopsis:
Sasha is desperate to find out who murdered her father. When getting the answer means pledging her soul to Eryx, she unlocks a secret that puts her in grave danger—Sasha is Anabo, a daughter of Eve, and Eryx’s biggest threat.

A son of Hell, immortal, and bound to Earth forever, Jax looks for redemption in the Mephisto Covenant—God’s promise he will find peace in the love of an Anabo. After a thousand years, he’s finally found the girl he’s been searching for: Sasha.

With the threat of Eryx looming, Jax has to keep Sasha safe and win her over. But can he? Will Sasha love him and give up her mortal life?

My Review:
THE MEPHISTO COVENANT is a fantastically exciting and original YA debut that will leave you wanting more. Faegan has concocted a fresh and unique story line like no other YA. Sure, the romance is a bit bland at times and Sasha a little annoying, but the plot more than makes up for my complaints.

I wasn't too happy with Sasha. She was outright rude to Jax no matter how nice he was to her. I get that her life really sucks after her mom is deported to Russia and she has to live with her awful cousin and aunt, but still, she had Jax! Or at least she could've had him if she wouldn't have been so wishy-washy. One second she really wants him, the next she is denying it. I hate protagonists who won't confront their feelings for a guy.

I didn't see why Sasha wouldn't admit her feelings for Jax sooner. I mean, he is such a great guy and cute to boot! Who in their right mind wouldn't want him? I grew to love Jax more with his patience that he had for Sasha. She is his key to salvation yet he is willing to wait, even let her run away. All he wants to do is make Sasha happy, even if it means sacrificing his own peace and happiness.

The whole Mephisto Covenant was really interesting! I haven't seen anything like it in YA! I was really upset that Sasha wasn't very likable, since I loved the story line so much. I am hoping for much more in her next novels.

I absolutely loved THE MEPHISTO COVENANT.  Faegan has crafted a compelling and fresh novel that is sure to fly off shelves.

  1. For some reason, I just couldn't get into this book. Since you really enjoyed it, I'll give it another go. Oh, and I also agree that I hate it when the protag doesn't admit her feelings earlier. Why do they wait? Do they think it'll go away like a cold or something? lol.

Thanks for the awesome review, hon!

  2. Agh! Sasha sounds so selfish. I'm not sure if she is my type of character, but Jax sure seems to be! I'm always looking for unique storylines in YA and this one definitely sounds it delivers. Thanks for the review, B.

  3. Yeah, I really liked the unique mythology! I wasn't a fan of Sasha or the romance, but you're right, the creativity made up for it. :) Glad to see you enjoyed this one, Bailey!

  4. Sasha was a huge problem for me as well, but like you, the uniqueness of the story and the Mephisto/Lucifer/God element was super interesting and allowed me to forgive some of Sasha's flaws. I think we were on the same page with this one Bailey!

  6. For some reason, this story just didn't resonate with me. Hate when that happens. But good to hear that you enjoyed it, despite some disagreements with characters (lol).

  8. I guess I didnt see Sasha as being selfish - i saw her as being really confused and spirally out of control. Jax also drops some pretty big bombs on her.
I do think it is a great concept and cannot wait for the sequel....in oh, a year!

  9. I haven't read a novel where a main character couldn't make up her mind about a guy like this sounds. I'm wondering if that would bug me or if the story would be so good that it wouldn't bother me. Just how good was that story???

  10. I thought this one sounded interesting ever since I heard of it but Sasha sounds like she might ruin the book for me. Sometimes the characters aren't terribly like-able in the first book but are better in the next ones so I hope that's the case here! So glad the rest of it was good at least!

  12. I have this one in my TBR pile but I might bump it down now because even though the plot and Jax sound great, Sasha seems like she'll make me not like this one as much. I'm not too fond of wishy-washy characters that feel sorry for themselves.
