Review: The Demon Trapper's Daughter by Jana Oliver

February 1, 2011
St. Martin's Griffin

Synopsis:
Riley Blackthorne just needs a chance to prove herself – and that’s exactly what the demons are counting on…

Seventeen-year-old Riley, the only daughter of legendary Demon Trapper, Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father's footsteps.  The good news is, with human society seriously disrupted by economic upheaval and Lucifer increasing the number of demons in all major cities, Atlanta’s local Trappers’ Guild needs all the help they can get – even from a girl. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing crush on fellow apprentice, Simon, Riley’s out saving distressed citizens from foul-mouthed little devils – Grade One Hellspawn only, of course, per the strict rules of the Guild. Life’s about as normal as can be for the average demon-trapping teen.

But then a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood.  And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, sudden tragedy strikes the Trappers’ Guild, spinning Riley down a more dangerous path than she ever could have imagined. As her whole world crashes down around her, who can Riley trust with her heart – and her life?

My Review:
THE DEMON TRAPPER'S DAUGHTER is a thrilling and fast-paced read that is sure to enthrall readers. The demonic lore is fascinating and sets Oliver's book apart from other demon books in the YA. I cannot wait to pick up SOUL THIEF, the sequel to THE DEMON TRAPPER'S DAUGHTER.

Riley is the beautiful and apt demon trapper apprentice whose goal is to someday be as capable as her father. He is well-known for his impressive demon trapping, and Riley longs to be in his position one day. Her only problem is that she is a girl, and there are no women demon trappers. She must prove herself to those who doubt her and overcome other obstacles that are thrown her way.

Riley definitely proved herself to me! Her determination to be a demon trapper drew me more into her story. I loved the scenes when she went trapping Grade One demons. They were quite the characters. My favorite demon was the Magpie (they like shiny things!). They were so cute even though they were demons! They were definitely the "nicest" of the bunch. As the Grade levels go up, the demons get nastier and scarier.

We are introduced to Beck right after Riley. He is her father's apprentice and they have a very...interesting relationship. I still don't know how to feel about him. He is so snarky and cynical yet I could tell that he was a great guy underneath. And I have to say that his accent was so cute! I looked forward to the times when he would appear on the scene. He sure makes an impression!

THE DEMON TRAPPER'S DAUGHTER is a creatively written YA that I think everyone should read. It is a great start to what is sure to be a memorable series.

  5. Okay, I have to admit this one's been sitting on my shelf for quite a while. I don't know why I haven't read it--I love a kick-butt heroine and the demons sound fun (well, as far as demons go...). You've convinced me. Moving it up the TBR pile!

  7. I bought this one for the DAC way back when it came out and still haven't read it. Guess I have to bump it up in my TBR pile. The Grade One demons do sound pretty cute and I like the idea of Riley having to prove herself in a male dominated field.
